We have some long days of classes and training at Awakenings Pole studio here in New Orleans so we are, not surprisingly, somewhat caffeine addicted. We've tried it all! Good coffee, bad coffee, weird coffee, cheap coffee, and coffee with booze. Here are our top 10 recommendations for coffee shops in and around the French Quarter here in New Orleans. (In no particular order!)

Top 10 Coffee Shops in New Orleans (2)
  1. Backatown Coffee Parlour - This is easily our favorite. Walking distance from the studio, right next to Saint Louis Cemetery #1 is a pretty large coffee shop (with clean bathrooms!). The coffee and tea is amazing and their delicious baked goods are made locally. The seating area is spacious and bright. Best of all, this is a black-owned business that supports and educates about sex-work and the historical significance of Storyville. And we love them for this!

  2. Flora Gallery & Coffee Shop - Only a few blocks down from Frenchmen Street in the Marigny is a late night coffee shop nestled in among the shotgun houses and local bars. Flora is a popular local coffee shop and is a favorite among non-drinkers looking for a late night hangout. Usually open till midnight!

  3. Envie Espresso Bar and Cafe - Another coffee shop (thankfully) open late! We honestly don't have a lot of them here in NOLA. And this one is right in the French Quarter! Cafe Envie serves up yummy hot chocolates, coffees and teas (with or without booze). Some of us at the pole studio have made a holiday tradition of getting a boozy hot chocolate and walking around the Quarter to look at Christmas decorations around the holiday season!

  4. St. Pat's Irish Coffeehouse - This is one of our newest favorite stops! When Backatown started closing earlier after Covid, we started searching for something that could quell our need for caffeine in the late afternoon. Something we could walk to that was right in the French Quarter. And we found this place! The ambience is so nice, the staff is so friendly, and the drinks are delicious. For being so close to Bourbon, it is pretty peaceful sitting on the patio or at their bar. And although they do serve alcohol, they have a decent selection of coffee and tea drinks.

  5. Z'otz Cafe - Wonder where all the goth and punk locals go to drink fancy teas and coffee? This is the place! Z'otz is over on Oak Street (you'll have to Uber if you are visiting) but Oak Street has a lot to offer and is well worth the trip. This eclectic coffee shop has a unique atmosphere, friendly staff, and some of the best tea and coffee in the city. (Try a Bad Wolf, it's delicious!) This is a great place to bring a boardgame and some friends and sip your coffee while listening to Sisters of Mercy.

  6. Breads on Oak - Another great place on Oak Street (and there's also one in the CBD) is Breads on Oak; a vegan bakery and sandwich shop. They also have a wonderful tea and coffee selection. Their vegan pastries are amazing! It is not surprising that they now have two locations. They are super popular with locals and tourists alike.

  7. Revelator Coffee - Another favorite afternoon stop among our staff! Right in the Central Business District is Revelator Coffee; a chic little coffee spot amongst a lot of great lunch spots. Their chai might be the very best in the city! The other drinks are also quite good as well...though I have a hard time ordering anything other than the chai since it is so good. Friendly staff, great atmosphere.

  8. District Donuts - We are better known for beignets in this city but if you get tired of fried dough with powdered sugar....you can head on over to District Donuts for fried dough of a different variety! Honestly, their sliders are amazing and possibly more popular than their donuts. But they also have a really nice menu of coffee and tea items to go with your donuts (or sliders!).

  9. Drip Affogato - Recently relocated but still in the Central Business District, this unique coffee shop (?) puts a sweet spin on how you get your caffeine! They pour your expresso over gelato! Not a coffee drinker? No problem. They also do a matcha pour over creamy matcha gelato. One of our favorite sweet treats here in town; Drip is definitely worth a visit!

  10. French Truck - You may have noticed that we don't have a lot of Starbucks in New Orleans. So if you are looking for quick and reliable coffee, French Truck is where to go! With locations in the Quarter, CBD, Uptown, and all over the city; this is the New Orleans version of a big coffee chain. But with much better tasting coffee! French Truck offers consistency and convenience without sacrificing quality.
