Anyone ship UPS packages to Access Points such as a UPS store?
Package theft is a big problem in my neighborhood. I had an expensive shipment ordered and the shipper encouraged me to use an Access Point to avoid issues. I entered my zip code into the UPS website and it gave me the nearest Access Point. It was a UPS store 2 miles away. The UPS website advised that I would need my I.D, tracking number, and signature to pick-up the package upon delivery. The website touts Access Points as "a convenient alternative option to receive or drop off ready-to-ship packages, including returns."
I arrived at the UPS store last week to pick up the package and was greeted by the owner. Here is a transcript of our conversation:
Me: "Hi, I'm here to pick-up a package."
Owner: "Okay. Do you rent a mailbox from us?"
Me: "No, I do not rent a mailbox from you. I used this address as an Access Point."
Owner: "You can't ship packages here if you're not a mailbox renter."
Me: "I'm sorry. The UPS website says you are an authorized UPS Access Point where I can send UPS packages for pick-up."
Owner: "It's not my problem what the UPS website says. Why would you send a package to a private business?"
Me: "Are you not an authorized Access Point? The UPS website lists this address as a place I can send and receive packages."
Owner (finds my package in the backroom): "It's not my problem what the website says. I have no way of releasing this package to you. I have to return this to the sender. You can't ship packages to private businesses."
Me: "My package is literally in your hand. Why would this have to go back to the sender? I'm right here. What can I do to get the package?"
Owner: "I'm supposed to be paid for these types of transactions. I don't make money on packages sent here as an Access Point."
Me (Realizing the guy wants money): "Okay, well I already paid for shipping, are you saying I have to pay you as well?"
Owner: "I usually get paid $5-10 dollars for these deals."
Me: "It's not my problem what you're paid. Take that up with UPS since you're an authorized Access Point. Give me my package or I call the cops."
Owner (hands over package): "Don't ever send a package here again. Next time I'm sending it back."
*I was supposed to sign for the package and show my I.D. I did neither. He just tossed me the package and told me to leave. I tried to file a complaint with UPS, but couldn't get a hold of a live person after an hour.
I could file a claim and describe the situation, but I did receive my package.
Anyone else have issues with Access Points?
