Lok Sabha Speaker Name Announcement Live Updates: Amid hectic parleys within the NDA and INDIA blocs with less than a week to go for the scheduled Lok Sabha Speaker election, the President on Thursday appointed seven-time MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem Speaker. Mahtab’s name was among the three doing the rounds as the BJP’s choice as Lok Sabha Speaker. The election is scheduled for June 26 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to propose a joint NDA nominee for the post. The BJP, it is learnt, is also keen on appointing an alliance party leader as Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, a post that the Congress has demanded for the Opposition citing convention.

The President on Thursday appointed BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The appointment came six days ahead of the scheduled election for the Lok Sabha Speaker on June 26. The pro-tem Speaker is responsible for administering the oath of office to new MPs and overseeing the process of the Lok Sabha Speaker’s election. A seven-time Lok Sabha MP, Mahtab shifted from the BJD to the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in March this year.

A special session of Parliament has been convened from June 24 to July 3. The Speaker’s election has been scheduled for June 26. The process will be undertaken after the newly-elected MPs are sworn in by the pro-tem Speaker on the first two days of the session. The session will also see the Prime Minister introduce his Council of Ministers and an address to a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu.
