2-Ingredient Biscuits (2024)

Putting a great meal on the table doesn’t have to be a whole shebang. These quick two-ingredient biscuits are incredibly easy to whip up whenever the craving strikes. As long as your pantry is stocked with self-rising flour and there’s heavy whipping cream in your fridge, homemade biscuits are at your fingertips. Plus, they’re the perfect treat to make with kids—just let the adults handle the oven!

2-Ingredient Biscuit Ingredients

  • Self-rising flour: No, it’s not made of magic! Self-rising flour is all-purpose flour that’s treated with baking powder and salt. It speeds up the process of throwing a recipe together, and this quick biscuit recipe benefits from it tenfold!
  • Heavy whipping cream: We use heavy whipping cream because it adds moisture, creates incredible flavor and adds browning power (that renders even more flavor!). Feel free to use a heavy cream substitute if you don’t have any on hand, but know this may alter the taste and/or texture a bit.

Directions

Step 1: Make the dough

Preheat the oven to 450°F. In a large bowl, pour in the self-rising flour and heavy whipping cream. Stir everything together with a fork until just combined. Avoid overmixing or your biscuits may turn out tough and dense.

Step 2: Knead

Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out on top. Knead the dough until everything is well combined and it’s no longer sticky. This can take up to five minutes, so be patient!

Step 3: Roll and cut

Roll the dough out to a 1/2-inch thickness. Brush off any excess flour to prevent the biscuits from drying out.

Using a cookie cutter, cut the biscuit dough into 2-1/2-inch biscuits.

Editor’s Tip: Cut your biscuits as closely together as possible. Since this dough doesn’t include butter (which would up the fluffiness factor), biscuits cut from re-rolled dough will be tough. We don’t recommend it.

Step 4: Bake

Place the biscuits in a large, ungreased cast-iron or other ovenproof skillet. Bake the biscuits until they’re golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes.

Editor’s Tip: If you don’t have an oven-safe skillet, you can use a sheet tray in a pinch.

Recipe Variations

  • Add cheese: We’re all looking for any excuse to eat more cheese, aren’t we? Knead in a high-quality shredded cheddar or mozzarella for a deeply savory flavor.
  • Sprinkle in herbs and spices: Spices and fresh or dried herbs would pack extra flavor into these super easy and quick biscuits. Use thyme, sage, rosemary, marjoram, black pepper, garlic powder or whatever is calling to you from your spice cabinet! Add them to the dough.
  • Finish with a wash: Before popping the biscuits in the oven, brush each biscuit with egg wash or milk for browning power and extra shine. Once the biscuits are out of the oven, brush on melted butter. Melted butter simply adds more irresistible flavor.
  • Make ‘em sweet: Brush on milk, heavy cream, half-and-half or buttermilk onto the tops of each cut-out biscuit, then sprinkle turbinado sugar on top and bake. Turbinado sugar adds sweetness, crunch and a gorgeous finish. This is especially necessary if you’re serving these biscuits with sweetened whipped cream and macerated strawberries for a quick strawberry shortcake dessert.

How to Store 2-Ingredient Biscuits

Cool the biscuits completely to room temperature, then place them in an airtight container. They can last at room temperature for up to three days.

Can I make my own self-rising flour?

Yes, you can make your own self-rising flour! In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt until well-combined. This makes enough self-rising flour for our two-ingredient biscuits, plus a tiny bit extra.

If you’d like to make a bigger batch of self-rising flour to keep on hand, multiply the recipe above to get your desired amount. Store it in an airtight container in a dry, dark place.

What do I serve with 2-ingredient biscuits?

These biscuits are truly perfect served right out of the oven, slathered with really good butter and a drizzle of honey. We also love them as the base for biscuits and sausage gravy, or alongside any breakfast or dinner spread!
